Intelek is going green
By installing new photovoltaic panels, Intelek Invest a.s. has taken another step toward its long-term vision of a cleaner and more sustainable way to minimize the environmental impact of industrial production.
Installing a photovoltaic power plant on the roof of the building and connecting it to the building’s electrical system will increase the building’s energy self-sufficiency. The power plant consists of a total of 214 monocrystalline photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 330 Wp, and the total installed capacity of the photovoltaic system is 70.6 kWp. The panels are located on the building’s roof and oriented toward the southeast and southwest, ensuring maximum utilization of solar energy. Given that the city of Brno, with its 1,620 hours of sunshine per year, is among the most suitable locations for solar energy use, we expect the power plant to operate at full capacity. The estimated annual electricity production is approximately 70,500 kWh. The panels cover a total area of 950 m².

The operation of photovoltaic panels offers a wide range of benefits, not only environmental ones. Undoubtedly, the greatest advantage is the use of a virtually inexhaustible energy source: the sun. Other benefits include quiet operation, zero emissions during energy conversion, and low-maintenance requirements. Operating the power plant is very simple and easily controlled, so the facility does not require specialized personnel. The power plant operates even when the sky is overcast, as it can convert not only direct sunlight but also scattered light into energy. On a cloudy day, the power plant operates at approximately 15–20% of its normal output. In the event that this output is insufficient to meet the buildings’ energy needs, energy stored in batteries can be utilized. A total of 6 batteries were installed, with a total usable storage capacity of 129.6 kWh. The battery system allows for discharge down to zero and also serves as a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for a selected backup circuit. In sunny weather, excess energy is stored in these batteries and is used mainly at night.
As mentioned in the introduction to this article, one of the greatest advantages of photovoltaics is its environmental friendliness, as it provides clean and renewable energy that helps mitigate the greenhouse effect. Its installation was thus another logical step toward contributing to a healthier environment, not only in the vicinity of Intelek’s headquarters. Together with its own retention tanks for collecting rainwater and the thoughtful planting of water-retaining plants that prevent wind erosion, Intelek has taken further positive steps to maintain a healthy environment.
The implementation of the photovoltaic power plant project was co-financed by the European Union under the OP PIK Energy Savings grant program.
