Implementation Methods of FTTx Optical Fiber Networks

  • FTTH (Fiber To The Home) – the optical fiber goes directly all the way to the customer. Currently not a very frequent solution—very costly.
  • FTTB (Fiber To The Building) – the optical fiber goes just close to the building. The fiber usually ends in the basement of the building or very close to the building, and from here the transfer of data is taken care of by either twisted-pair cables or coaxial cables. This solution is suitable for large buildings with a potential of many end users.
  • FTTC (Fiber To The Curb) – the optical fiber goes and ends very close to the individual households or offices, where the individual terminals will be present. The optical fiber ends in the junction boxes and then goes to the customer. This distance is implemented by the distribution of coaxial cables or copper conductors. The types of FTTC and FTTB are practically different just in the make-up of junction boxes of the customer system. The FTTC uses the outside-environment junction boxes, which leads to the requirements of environmental resistance (IP Rating).
  • FTTN (Fiber To The Node) – the optical fiber goes from the service provider to the specific network node, e.g. the apartment complex or the large building compound, and then the metal conductors are used for distribution to the customers. This connection type is most often used in with the broadband networks.
